Shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams are all temporary methods which must be repeated on a frequent basis. The Cutera CoolGlide® laser is noninvasive light therapy systems which have been custom designed to eliminate undesired hair from all parts of the body. The Cutera CoolGlide® laser generate pulses of intense, concentrated light which are directed through small, cooled hand pieces which are gently applied to the treatment site.
The Cutera Nd YAG CoolGlide laser hair removal treatment now offers the best solution to remove unwanted hair, and can be used on all skin types, on all parts of the body, almost painlessly, it works by carefully and precisely focusing the laser beam at the hair follicle. The pigment or melanin in the hair acts as a conductor for the energy being emitted from the laser, which travels down the hair shaft and denatures the hair follicle. This means the follicle will no longer be able to produce hair.
IPL’s are not lasers. The machines produce a broad spectrum of wavelengths (like a light bulb) and cannot be focused to a concentrated beam. This wide spectrum is diffused, and does not target any specific aspect of the hair and because a range of different wavelengths are dispersed at a variety of depths only some of these will be effective for hair reduction. A more shallow penetration in comparison to laser means that deeper, thicker hairs are not treated effectively. Some wavelengths of the light are absorbed by the hair, resulting in heating and disruption of the follicle, while the rest are reflected away. In addition, some of the light can be absorbed into the surrounding tissue as well, leading to heating of the pigment in the skin. This is why there is more of a risk of burns for a darker skin type. IPL is a cheaper, less effective technology for reducing body hair.
It is worth noting that, occasionally, IPL is referred to as IPL Laser treatment. This can be misleading, as the beam produced by IPL is wide-spectrum light and does not involve lasers.
LASER TREATMENT
Laser machines create more heat directed at the hair follicle than IPL systems, laser produces a single, concentrated wavelength of light that penetrates deeper into the skin to reach the base of the hair follicle, hence achieving better results. Because the heat is absorbed by the follicle, and not the skin, there is a decreased risk of burning when using Laser machines. This also makes Laser a safer option for darker skinned individuals. The wavelength used in laser treatment has been specifically selected to target the melanin in the hair follicle, unlike IPL, which uses a more scattered approach where only some of the light is absorbed by the follicle. The narrow beam used in laser treatment is targeted, precise, and effective – all of the energy used in the treatment is being utilised for the intended purpose of hair growth reduction/elimination.
Laser treatments may be more expensive than IPL, but the effects are much more prominent. IPL’s have an important place in treatment of the skin. The non-specific nature of an Intense Pulsed Light is what makes the treatment so effective when we are targeting skin problems, such as superficial pigmentation and fine blood vessels.

Do not expose the skin to UV light (sun exposure and/or the use of tanning beds) or self tanners for at least 4 weeks prior to your appointment.
Please shave the area to be treated 24 hours prior to your appointment.
Try to avoid moisturisers or perfumed products in the area 24 hours prior to your appointment.
If the treated area is often exposed, please apply an SPF 50 daily as a moisturiser, regardless of the weather.
Avoid heavy exfoliation, microdermabrasion or chemical peels for 2 weeks prior to your appointment.
Please inform your aesthetician of any complications or changes to your medication prior to your appointment
The laser will only target hair in the anagen (active) growing phase. Therefore there is no advantage to scheduling treatment sessions closer together. Should you need to change an appointment, we will always aim the make the appointment later rather than sooner.
Do not apply pressure or hot water to the treated area within 48 hours of procedure.
SPF necessary whilst in sunlight, and facial moisturisers are advised to keep your skin healthy after the treatment.
Avoid heavy or strenuous exercise for 24 hours post treatment.
Avoid using heavily perfumed products in the treated area for around 24 hours post treatment
Please do not wax, pluck, or thread the hair being treated in between treatments. For the treatment to be effective we need the follicle of the hair to be intact. Waxing, plucking or thread will dramatically impede the treatment results.
As the name implies, the CoolGlide hand piece cools and soothes as it glides along the skin. When the pulse of light is delivered, some clients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation.
Most areas require 3-6 treatments. However, the number of CoolGlide treatments required for optimal long-term benefits depends on multiple factors – hair thickness, the area treated and clients hair’s growth cycle. Individual results may vary. Individual treatment plan will be discussed at initial consultation.
Immediately following CoolGlide treatment, the area may appear a bit red and swollen. Three to seven days after treatment the client may experience what seems to be regrowth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of the treatment and are not regrowing. Between treatments clients should not wax or pluck hair, but it is permissible to shave.
Treatment time depends on the size of the area, 15 – 60 mins but it typically takes 15 minutes for underarms and 60mins for lower legs.
Although patients experience few side effects, the most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn. These effects typically last for several hours or less. In rare instances, blistering may occur. Consult with your medical professional for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.
